What have you learned about technologies in the process of constructing this product?

The research stage

During our research for comparable products the main form of technology we used was the internet. I specifically used the following websites to collect the clips/screenshots we needed.

NETFLIX

PUTLOCKER

YOUTUBE

And of course to find the right comparable products we used the search engine,

These websites (particularly GOOGLE) helped our product progress a lot faster than if we hadn't used technology; without it, we wouldn't have been able to find, watch, or upload which essentially would hinder the entire project hugely.

We also utilised Survey Monkey to helps us discover things like who our target audience should be, what they expected to see, etc. Survey Monkey also has an 'analyse' option which takes all the data from the surveys and produces statistics; this sped up the research portion of our product quite a bit as it did the analysing for us rather than us having to figure out the exact statistics (which would've been a long and arduous task)

Another website we frequently used during the research stage was BLOGGER. This allowed us to actually document our findings and progress.
Documentation was also made easier by using PREZI; an enhanced slideshow based software that allows for specificity and detail in presenting.

The planning stage

For the majority of the planning stage we used either classic pen and paper or Word Documents.

However, when creating mood boards we used both Word and GOOGLE to find and format the pictures we needed to accurately show the character types we wanted to use.

The production stage

To make our product we obviously had to film, we used a high-tech Nikon digital camera to do this.
After filming, we used IMOVIE to edit, add, and finalise. To do this though we had to import images, clips and sound files which, despite being a long process, was extremely beneficial; using a versatile program like IMOVIE we were able (to the best of our ability) edit our product to fit our plans.

Here we used the colour altering feature
to make the shot seem darker and more effective.
We used the cropping feature which allowed us
to select exactly what we wanted from the frame
so we could effectively emphasise her expression.

Here we use the 'clip inspector' component to elongate the shot.

We used the 'title' feature to add the appropriate titles and format
them the way we wanted them.

The only other technology platforms we used after this point were Youtube, to find the audio clips we needed to add, and Youtube Converter, to give us the ability to convert the clips into a suitable format allowing them to actually be uploaded to IMOVIE.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

As our second evaluation question, we were tasked to show how our product showed the genre specific conventions and this is what we did.

Preliminary Task

We were tasked with creating a scene that uses a match on action shot, a shot reverse shot, and the 180 degree rule. This is what we made.

Scouting

These are the main locations we'll be filming in. We picked them because they really embody the theme of destruction and the size of the areas can contribute to the loneliness theme.

Audience research 2

The audience research that we have definitely taken into consideration and will be applying to our opening.

Story Board

This is essentially the visual representation of our shot list.

Shot List

This is our shot list which describes chronologically what we need to film shot by shot.

Timeline

A detailed timeline of events we need to film. Having a second by second, chronological timeline will really help cut down filming time.

Script

Our edited version of the script and most likely the final version.

Casting Ideas

To help pick the ideal cast for our opening we looked at different variations of what we wanted / the typical characteristics of their dominant representations. From what was available to us we chose the people you see in the slide show.
We felt that they accurately depicted what we were trying to show effortlessly and helped us to add our own perception of the genre to our piece.

Mood board: Aurora

This is the mood board we created to represent the main protagonist Aurora. This collection essentially embodies all that a dystopian survivor should be and hopefully what we'll be able to re-create in our opening.

Mood board: Teenagers

This is the mood board we made to represent the Aurora's (imaginary) teenage friends. The pictures essentially represent the dominant ideology of who teenagers as a group are. In our opening we didn't have to try particularly hard to embody these characteristics as we are teenagers ourselves and life George Melley said; there's a complex relationship between reality and stereotypes as there is an element of truth to every one of them.

Audience Research - Focus group 2

This is our second focus group screening as having a response to two videos rather than one gives us more information and therefore more to work from.

I am Legend opening analysis

This trailer just like the one in my last post is not what I analysed, it is there to give a general gist of what this film is about. Only a few shots in this clip are relevant to the task set but again this is the best I could find.

Z for Zachariah opening analysis

The first 30 seconds of this trailer is essentially made from the first 2 minutes of the actual film which is what I analysed. However, since I cant get the clip I need the trailer will have to do. (Disregard the rest of the trailer because that's all from later on in the movie and is therefore basically irrelevant).

Comparable Genres

The comparable genres we came up with. These were potential texts to look at to compare with the genre we decided to go with.

Initial planning ideas

This is a mindmap of the initial characteristics we thought we'd find in our research and the openings we considered researching.
